Daily Preview

Serena Williamscontinued to pick up steam in her attempt to come back from her extended absence and defend her Wimbledon crown at the same time. She efficiently dismantled 26th-seeded Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-2.

Rebounding from her first two contests that went to three sets, Williams never allowed the Russian into the match, hitting 32 winners with 10 aces to punctuate her aggressive game. Despite her commanding game, Williams controlled her sometimes erratic forehand, limiting herself to 14 errors.

Kirilenko was simply overmatched by the return of Serena, who won 47 percent of points on her return despite a respectable 70 percent serving average from Kirilenko. Williams will hope to improve on the big points as she only converted three out of 14 break chances.

In the fourth round, Williams will take on the 9th seed, Marion Bartoli, who struggled to defeat 21st-seeded Flavia Pennetta 5-7, 6-4, 9-7 in three hours nine minutes. Both players competed at a high level with Bartoli hitting 45 winners to Pennetta’s 65 winners.

A shaky serve hurt Pennetta, who hit nine double faults and allowed Bartoli to convert seven break points out of 27 chances. The Frenchwoman surrended six breaks on her serve due, in part, to six double faults.

The struggles of 18th-seeded Ana Ivanovic continued as she was eliminated by World No. 81 Petra Cetkovska, who relied on a consistent game to carry her to a 6-2, 7-6 (0) victory. While Cetkovska only converted two of her seven break opportunities, Ivanovic was unable to make any progress, winning only 12 points on return for the match.

Cetkovska limited her errors to 12 while hitting 17 winners, significantly better than the Serbian who offset 22 winners with 23 errors. Cetkovska will play Sabine Lisicki, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Japanese qualifier Misaki Doi.

Completing their match from Friday, Tamira Paszek eliminated the 6th seed, Francesca Schiavone, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9. Paszek will face Ksenia Pervak, a straight sets winner overAndrea Petkovic.

The Championships at Wimbledon are progressing quickly with expected results and upsets alike. In third-round action, fifth-seededMaria Sharapova advanced easily with a 6-2, 6-3 and World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki continued her winning ways over Jarmila Gajdosova 6-3, 6-2.

Sharapova applied constant pressure to the serve of Klara Zakopalova, who was only able to win 46 percent of points on her serve. Neither player performed exceptionally well, but the difference was really the return, as Sharapova was able to convert five of her 11 break chances.

Zakopalova did not help her cause, hitting 16 unforced errors and three double faults compared to 13 winners. Sharapova was able to dictate play a bit more, hitting four aces and 20 winners to offset her own 21 errors.

Improving her perfect career record against Gajdosova to three wins, the top seed used her typical consistent game to the effect of 15 winners and only five errors. Despite a similar solid performance from Gajdosova, who committed only 12 errors while hitting 25 winners, it was not enough to overcome Wozniacki.

The World No. 1 took advantage of poor serving from Gajdosova, who hit only 53 percent of first serves in and surrended three breaks in six chances. Wozniacki was surprisingly successful in dictating play, winning all five points when she ventured to the net.

She will take on the 24th seed Dominika Cibulkova who eliminated 16th-seeded Julia Goerges 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Goerges dictated play throughout the match, performing better statistically overall, but without the consistency needed to beat Cibulkova.

Goerges converted five of her six break chances, but surrended five breaks as well in eight opportunities. Her downfall was Cibulkova's ability to punish the second serve, winning 66 percent of points when Goerges missed the first serve.

Sharapova will next face Peng Shuai, a 6-2, 7-6 (5) winner over Melinda Czink, who eliminated Samantha Stosur in the first round.
