The World Football Challenge is an exhibition international club football competition featuring football clubs from Europe andNorth America, which has been held since the summer of 2009. There was no WFC in 2010, due to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.Chelsea F.C. are the reigning champions.
The 2011 World Football Challenge was held in July and August of 2011. It featured thirteen different squads meeting up in fourteen matches across the United States. The tournament format was considerably different than the 2009 event, due to the increase in number of teams. This is the first WFC event that MLS teams participated in.
The 2011 tournament increased in scale from the 2009 incantation, bringing in thirteen teams from seven different countries. All the teams are either a member of the UEFA or CONCACAF federations. The field is highlighted by English champion Manchester United F.C. and Spanish league champion and European champion Barcelona FC. Club America is the only team that will return from the 2009 competition.
This tournament for the first time also includes five teams from Major League Soccer, which is the top-flight league for the host countries, United States and Canada. As another first, there will be a game played outside the United States, at Vancouver, Canada's Empire Field.
North American clubs which have confirmed their participation for 2011 include Chicago Fire, Chivas Guadalajara, Club America, LA Galaxy, New England Revolution, Philadelphia Union, and Vancouver Whitecaps.
Four representatives from Europe's top leagues of England and Spain, all of whom won their country's blue ribbon competitions in the 2010-11 season will join the North American clubs, those being: European champions F.C. Barcelona, FA Cup winners Manchester City, Premier League champions Manchester United and Copa Del Rey winners Real Madrid.
Brief Match Preview
David Beckham helped Real Madrid to the Liga title in 2007, but was injured and replaced with the team down 1-0 in his final match, only to watch Madrid come back to win that game and clinch the title.
Galaxy star Landon Donovan's deflected shot against Spain in the 2009 Confederation Cup fell to Madrid's Sergio Ramos, who couldn't clear before Clint Dempsey slid in to put the game on ice for the Americans.
This will be the second time in as many years that the Galaxy and Real Madrid have faced eachother. Madrid won the 2010 match 3-2 after going 2-0 down.
The match will be played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The 2010 edition was held at the Rose Bowl.
This will be thefirst match against the Galaxy for Kaka (pictured, right), having missed out on last year's match through injury.
